The Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare program emphasizes personal responsibility. VIEW participants may be provided with services such as job skills training, work experience, job readiness training, child care assistance, transportation and other work related expenses.
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families is a program that provides temporary financial assistance to eligible families with children.
Food stamps are coupons that can be used to buy food at any store that has a sign saying We Accept Food Coupons" or "Quest." They can also be used to buy seeds or plants to grow food in home gardens. For more information about applying for Food Stamps, see the Frequently Asked Questions page.
Eligible working families may receive help in paying day care costs. Most families are required to pay a portion of the cost of care, with the day care program paying the remainder. Family contribution is based on income and family size.
These programs pay for a variety of medical services, including prescription drugs, doctor visits, nursing facility care and hospital care.
General Relief (GR) provides limited financial assistance to individuals and families. Components of the local GR plan include assistance to minors living with non-relatives, assistance to transients, indigent burials, and one-time emergency needs for SSI recipients.
This program provides short term, limited financial assistance to families with children when a fire or other natural disaster has destroyed those things necessary for taking care of the family. Payments can be made for food, clothing, shelter, or the repair or replacement of household items.
Temporary care is arranged for children who cannot be in their own homes.
Adoption is a service for children who cannot be cared for by their birth parents and who need and can benefit from new and permanent family ties established through a legal process. Adoption services are provided to children who need permanent families, birth parents who are unable to parent their children and adoptive parents who want to provide a home for a child not born to them.

Home and community-based services allow the elderly or adults with disabilities to remain in their homes rather than move to institutional placements. Screening for adult care residence and nursing facility placements is provided.
Reports of abuse, neglect and exploitation of elders and adults with disabilities are investigated. Services are developed to prevent abuse, neglect and exploitation of these populations.
