Jamestown 2007
The 400th anniversary of the founding at Jamestown, America's first permanent English settlement, will be commemorated throughout Virginia and the nation in 2007. And you can be a part of it! King William County is one of more than 120 communities throughout the Commonwealth that has joined the Virginia 2007 Community Program.
The Virginia 2007 Community Program, launched by Gov. Mark Warner June 2003, provides a way for all Virginians to participate in the Jamestown 2007 commemoration. Participating communities are considering projects ranging from building walking trails to documenting community histories to establishing new museums.
As a Virginia 2007 Community Program participant, King William County will host programs and events as well as promote projects sponsored by local civic groups, businesses or other organizations that enhance community pride, improve the quality of life, increase education awareness, trigger economic development and expand tourism.
King William County is seeking local businesses and organizations who would like to plan legacy projects or plan special events during one of the theme months throughout 2007. The themes are: January - Religious Freedom & Heritage; February - Black History; March - Women's History; May - Jamestown Month, Asian Pacific Heritage Month, Historic Preservation Month & National Transportation Month; June - Cultures of Virginia Month; July - Celebration of Liberty Month; August - Free Enterprise Month & Agriculture and Industry Month; September - Rule of Law Month & Hispanic Heritage Month; October - Virginia History Month; November - American Indian Heritage Month & Democracy Month; December - Remembering 2007 Month.
As a local partner, your programs and events will be included in all marketing materials that the county produces promoting the Virginia 2007 Community Program. Events will also be listed on the county's website, the Jamestown calendar of event's website and on the River Country Tourism Council's website and in its annual tourism brochure.
