The Planning Department is responsible for protecting King William’s natural resources and quality of life through developing and recommending growth management strategies and encouraging community growth through sound land use development practices.
This department is responsible for long-range planning for land use and transportation and for reviewing and updating the County’s Comprehensive Plan, Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances. The Planning Department is also responsible for processing and reviewing land disturbance and zoning permits, rezoning, conditional use and special exception requests, plans of development, subdivision proposals and erosion and sediment control for the County. Planning staff also provides support to the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals and the Historic Preservation and Architectural Review Board on matters involving long-range planning and development review policy.
A comprehensive plan is a statement of long-range policies made by the governing body of a community concerning its future physical development. Comprehensive planning is one process available to local government for addressing current issues, anticipating needs, and scheduling public improvements.
It is the purpose of the King William County Comprehensive Plan to provide a sound basis for the preparation of detailed functional plans which will serve as a general guide in the day-to-day decisions of County government. It establishes goals and implementation strategies for managing the future growth and development of the County.
This plan was prepared by the Planning Commission with the assistance of the County planning staff and consultants. It was adopted by the Board of Supervisors on June 23, 2003.

In September 1997, King William County began implementing the Enhanced E-911 System. Using aerial photographs taken for the purpose, the consulting firm of MSAG assigned street addresses to all visible structures in the county. Address plates were then hand-delivered to each location.
Since that time, MSAG has digitized its E-911 maps and the county’s tax maps in AutoCad format for use in the GIS system.
