The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program has been in King
William County Schools since 1986. The King William County Sheriff's Office has two certified D.A.R.E. Officers: Sheriff Jeff Walton and Deputy Keith Wright. Deputy Wright is teaching the D.A.R.E. Program during the current school year.
During the fall semester, students in the 5th grade participated in the 10-week program. During the spring semester, Kindergartners will participate in the D.A.R.E. Safety Training, which is a 6-week program.
D.A.R.E. was originally developed by the Los Angeles Police Department in cooperation with the Unified School District in 1983. Conceived on the premise that prevention is the only long-term answer to drug problems, this innovative program is proving to be effective and is now taught in schools in all 50 states and several foreign countries.
The D.A.R.E. program is positive and substantive. It avoids scare tactics and relies on accurate information and a straight-forward approach.
For more information about the D.A.R.E. Program, visit the official D.A.R.E. website.
Two deputies are assigned to the School Resource Officer (SRO) Program. Deputy Keith Wright is assigned to Hamilton-Holmes Middle School and Deputy Carla Middleton is assigned to King William High School. Their duties include acting as a liaison between the school and the Sheriff's Office and to provide a safe environment for our children to learn in. They teach programs such as Class Action and D.A.R.E.
