General Information

Since 1870, the Virginia Constitution has required that the post of Treasurer be an elected office, making the local Treasurer accountable directly to the citizens.

The Treasurer is the chief financial officer of the county and is responsible for collecting revenues in the form of taxes and fees. These revenues include:

  • Real estate taxes
  • Personal property taxes
  • License taxes
  • Permit fees
  • State income taxes
  • Court, sheriff and clerk fees

The Treasurer also manages the investment of local funds and maintains the county’s financial records.

2010 Tax Rates

Real estate taxes are due twice a year on June 25 and December 5. Questions regarding property assessments should be directed to the Commissioner of the Revenue.

Personal Property Taxes are due December 5 of each year. Taxes are assessed as of January 1 of each year and are not prorated.

* Residents of West Point are subject to a split levy. Tax rates given here for the Town of West Point are the nominal rates collected by the County Treasurer. The Town of West Point assesses additional taxes on residents which are paid directly to the town. The tax rates provided here do not reflect those additional assessments.

Real Estate Tax Exemptions

Certain elderly and disabled persons are allowed exemptions of Real Estate Taxes.

Vehicle License Fees are added to personal property tax bills each year.

Inquiries about vehicles or assessments on your personal property tax bills should also be directed to the Commissioners’ Office .

Where to pay

Taxes can be paid at the Treasurer’s Office during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Avoid waiting in line by mailing your taxes before the due date. A convenient return envelope is enclosed with your bill. The official U.S. Postmark will be used as the posting date.

Taxes for the exact amount printed on the bill can also be paid at the following locations :

  • Citizens & Farmers Bank, West Point
  • Bank of Essex, Manquin and West Point
  • Union Bank and Trust, Manquin

You can pay your taxes or permit fees by credit card using one of the following convenient methods:

In Person: Taxes may be paid by credit card or debit card at the Treasurer’s office. (Visa, MasterCard)

By Telephone: Call 1-800-2PAY-TAX (1-800-272-9829) from any touch-tone phone. You will need the jurisdiction code for King William County (1018), your tax bill number, a valid credit card number, and a daytime telephone number. This service is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover)

Online by Credit Card: Through Official Payments Corp. (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover)

A convenience fee will be charged for each credit card payment.

Online by E-Check: Through Official Payments Corp. A convenience fee will be charged for each E-Check payment.

Real estate bills are mailed in the name of the property owner as of January 1 each year. If you receive a bill for any property you have sold, please forward the bill to the current owner. Real estate bills which are requested by a mortgage company are sent directly to that organization. If you receive a real estate bill and your mortgage company should be paying, you should forward the bill to the mortgage company.
