June 23, 2020 Dual Party Primary 

What’s on the Ballot:

The Democratic and Republican Parties will have a primary election for the purpose of nominating a candidate for the offices of:

Republican Party – United States Senate 

Democratic Party – United States House of Representatives 1st Congressional District

What is a Dual Primary Election?


A dual primary is an election held for the purpose of selecting a candidate to represent a political party in the November Election for a particular office. Voters decide who will be the nominee of the political party. In a Dual Primary, the parties’ primaries are held on the same day. Virginia law permits a voter to vote in either primary, but in only one of the primaries held on the same day. (§ 24.2-530)

When you go to your polling place on Election Day with your photo ID you will be asked: 

“In which party’s primary do you wish to vote?”

Important Dates for June 23rd Election:

  • Last day to Register to vote/ Update information on Registration to be eligible to vote in this election is Monday, May 18th.
  • Absentee ballots will be available starting Friday, May 8, 2020
  • First Day of In-Person/ Curbside voting starts Friday, May 8, 2020- The county Offices are now open to the public for In-Person voting in the General Registrar’s office. 
  • Last day to request absentee ballot by mail is Tuesday, June 16, 2020 by 5:00PM
