Virginia Winter Weather Awareness
As temperatures in the commonwealth get colder, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and the National Weather Service (NWS) encourage Virginians to prepare for the upcoming winter season. Winter can bring dangerously low temperatures, power outages, and unpredictable road conditions. In February 2021, parts of Central Virginia saw their worst icing impacts in more than two decades.
During a winter storm, roads, and walkways may become extremely dangerous or impassable, and access to critical community services may be limited. Preparing your home, vehicle, and family before a winter storm arrives is critical.
Take time with your family, community, school, or business to review your emergency plans, build or resupply an emergency kit, and learn about winter weather and how it impacts Virginia.
